Program Model

TOGETHER FOR THE JOURNEY…

In addition to the regular home structure and activities, Abriter utilizes the PuP program as its model for parent education.

Parenting programs have considerable potential to improve the mental health and well-being of children, improve family relationships, and benefit the community at large.

What is PuP?

The overarching aim of the PuP program is to help parents facing adversity develop positive and secure relationships with their children. Within this strength-based approach, the family environment becomes more nurturing and less conflictual and both parents and children learn to self-regulate their behaviour.

The Parents Under Pressure (PuP) program combines psychological principles relating to parenting, child behaviour and parental emotion regulation within a case management model. The program is home-based and designed for families in which there are many difficult life circumstances that impact on family functioning. Such problems may include depression and anxiety, substance misuse, family conflict and severe financial stress. The program is highly individualized to suit each family.

Parenting programming

Being a parent, even under the most ideal scenarios, can come with a variety of difficulties and obstacles. Being a young parent can sometimes heighten these experiences, adding additional stress as you try to be the best parent you can.

The Abriter team will accompany and support program participants, helping them to thrive in their role as parents, regardless of their age. We use the PuP curriculum as our basis for parent education.

lifeskills

From cooking a healthy and balanced meal to learning how to budget and maximize every dollar, program participants will have many opportunities to grow in skills and competencies essential to thriving independently.

Staff members, volunteers and guest facilitators from the community will rotate in facilitating a number of enriching opportunities to grow in competency.

transitional preparation

During a stay with Abriter, an individual is able to take time to prepare for next steps, along with their caring support worker.

Individualized support may include help with tasks such as finding a daycare spot, help finding employment, support gathering documents and applying for benefits, all to facilitate a transition into autonomy and long-term housing.
