an important impact

  • TH PROGRAMS ARE MORE SUCCESSFUL IN ENDING CHRONIC HOMELESSNESS THAN SERVICES ALONE

Short‐term provision of housing is more effective in ending homelessness than services alone, although the evidence is limited. A comparison study of participants in transitional programs for the street homeless in New York City found that close to two‐thirds of the experimental group members, who were provided with temporary housing as well as access to support services, were living in permanent housing three months after leaving the program, compared to only one‐third of the comparison.

  • UNSTABLE HOUSING NEGATIVELY AFFECTS FETAL-MATERNAL HEALTH OUTCOMES

Homeless mothers had less prenatal care and well-visits were less likely to take prenatal vitamins and were more likely to be underweight or obese. Infants born to homeless mothers had lower birth weights, longer hospital stays and were more likely to receive neonatal intensive care.

Homeless women were younger, unmarried, uninsured, less educated, less likely to initiate and sustain breastfeeding, and had less prenatal care and well-visits. They were also more likely to .. smoke cigarettes, be underweight or have class III obesity, and not take preconception multivitamins. Infants had lower birth weights, a longer hospital stay, and were more likely to receive neonatal intensive care.

  • A POSITIVE IMPACT ON BEHAVIOUR AND RELATIONSHIPS: FOR DEPENDENT CHILDREN POST-TRANSITIONAL HOME
Child: Behavioral changes. Areas of greatest positive change from before to after TH were getting along with peers, generally behaving well, and enjoying school.

YOUNG PARENTS

Individuals have the chance and opportunity to be equipped, encouraged and empowered as they take a moment to restore, heal and prepare for the next season of life as they transition out of the Abriter program and into more permanent housing.

PREGNANCY

Overall better health and less stress will help pregnancies progress with fewer complications. Individuals will have true freedom of choice when making pregnancy decisions, not feeling pressured to terminate due to unstable housing.

DEPENDENT CHILDREN

Children will be safe, invested in and given the opportunity to thrive in a safe, nurturing environment while mom becomes more attentive and bonded to her little one(s) through intentional programming designed to enrich.
